Bird & Wildlife records for the week beginning 8/9/14

Monday, 8 September 2014 10:32:44 Europe/London

September

This is the month to head to the east coast, after easterly winds Suffolk to Aberdeen will have rarer birds such as Wryneck, Red Backed Shrike and Bluethroats, towards the end of the month the first Yellow Browed Warblers will be arriving, Arctic and Greenish Warblers should also arrive, elsewhere the first American waders will put in an appearance, Buff Breasted Sandpipers, Baird’s Sandpipers and Pectoral Sandpipers should be in the UK.

Closer to home, if we get prolonged west / south west winds, Severn Beach can be very good for sea birds such as Manx shearwaters, Petrels, Skuas and if you are lucky a Sabine’s Gull , best place to look is from the sea wall opposite the village an hour either side of high tide!

More waders are on the move, Curlew sandpipers and Little Stints can turn up in our area along the coast and on inland lakes such as Chew valley and the Cotswold Water Park

Bird Records for the week 11/08/14

Monday, 11 August 2014 13:23:43 Europe/London

August

August is the month to head to the coast, with south west winds lots of seabirds will be going past, anywhere from Cornwall to west Sussex can be good. For Cory’s and Great Shearwaters Cornwall and South Devon are the places to be, I will be in Cornwall at Porthgwarra or Pendeen sometime this month!

Many waders are on the move, Curlew Sandpipers and Knot are turning up in our area, this is also the time for American waders to arrive so look carefully through any dunlin and ringed plover flocks for White Rumped, Pectoral and Baird’s Sandpipers

Recent Bird records (South Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and the old county of Avon)

10th August

Spotted Crake at Chew Valley lake plus an Osprey

8th August

Just outside of our area, at Slimbridge a pair of Blue headed wagtails have successfully fledged 2 young, the first breeding record at this site.

A Nightjar was at the Cotswold Water Park around pit 82 , very rare at this site !

5th August

5 Garganey at Chew Valley Lake

4th August

3 Wood Sandpipers at Northwick wetlands
